Material Testing & Failure Analysis in China

Verify grade, composition, microstructure and heat treatment.

Chemical and metallographic analysis to verify material grade conformance, identify counterfeit material, evaluate heat treatment and investigate failures.

Material Testing
Service Overview

What this service covers

Material substitution is one of the most common — and most damaging — quality failures from Chinese suppliers. Our material testing service verifies that the steel, aluminum, copper, plastic or composite actually used in your part matches the grade specified on your drawing, with chemistry, microstructure, hardness and mechanical properties as evidence.

We deliver Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, XRF for rapid screening, metallographic preparation and microscopy for grain structure and heat-treatment evaluation, hardness testing (Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell, micro-hardness) and full tensile / impact / bend testing on standardized specimens.

For failure investigations, material testing is combined with fractography, SEM/EDS and process review to identify root cause — fatigue, brittle fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, intergranular corrosion, decarburization or non-conforming heat treatment — and to support warranty and supplier-claim discussions with defensible data.

Counterfeit Stainless Steel Detection
Industrial Equipment

Counterfeit Stainless Steel Detection

Challenge
European OEM suspected supplier was substituting 304 stainless for cheaper 201 grade on visible fasteners.
Approach
OES + XRF on 50 random samples from 3 production lots; full composition report against ASTM A276.
Outcome
Confirmed 60% of one lot was 201 grade. Supplier credited the order and corrective action audit was issued.
Aerospace Ground Support

Fatigue Failure Root-Cause Analysis

Challenge
Aluminum bracket fractured prematurely in service; OEM needed proof for warranty claim.
Approach
Fractography, metallography and hardness mapping showed coarse grain and incomplete solution heat treatment.
Outcome
Heat-treatment process at supplier confirmed out-of-spec; supplier replaced inventory and revised process.
Frequently Asked Questions

Material Testing — what customers ask

Which standards do you test to?+

ASTM, EN, ISO, JIS and Chinese GB are routine. We can also test to customer-specific specifications when supplied with the standard document.

Can you certify material against EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2?+

Yes — we issue independent third-party EN 10204 3.1 certificates and can coordinate 3.2 with witnessing surveyor when required.

How small a sample do you need?+

OES requires a roughly 10 × 10 mm flat surface. For tensile testing we need enough material to extract a standard specimen — we'll advise during scoping.
